Earlier this week, the Yonkers Board of Education voted for 251 layoffs in order to balance the budget. Daily Voice news coverage about the proposed cuts can be found by clicking here.
Yonkers' school budget is handled differently than all the other school districts in Westchester since the school district and the city's budget are combined.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano proposed nearly $548 million for the school district saying it's the largest contribution to the Department of Education in the city's history.
However, Yonkers school administrators say that's not enough funding and there will be a budget shortfall of more than $45 million due to higher student enrollment, rising salaries and mandated benefits.
The city charter must be adopted by June 1 which means the school layoffs would take effect June 30 -- the end of Yonker's fiscal year.
